Poverty Stings Despite Nigerian Govt's N3.5trn Social Interventions

More than 70% of Nigerians are living in poverty, according to a new report by the country's National Bureau of Statistics.

And while President Muhammadu Buhari's administration has spent more than $3.5 trillion over the past seven years on anti-poverty programs, the level of poverty in the country seems to be on the rise.

LEADERSHIP reports the NBS report shows 133 million Nigerians are living below the poverty line.

The country's economic slump led to the creation of the National Social Investment Program (NSIP), which aims to alleviate poverty in the country.

NSIP is one of the largest social protection programs in Africa with $1 billion earmarked annually to cause positive change in the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable in the country.

However, some experts believe the level of poverty in Nigeria could have been much higher if not for government interventions during the recession. Read the Entire Article
